For anyone working in sales or in any growth-oriented business, this should be a known phrase. Or at least variations of it, like “Big, Fat, Hairy Goals”. I find it even more important to make your own, personal goals. I have made mine – and I’ll let you in on them.
These goals can of course easily be seen as New Year Promises. But they are not. They are something more than that – they are the Big Hairy Audacious Goals – and not your average weak and vague New Year Promises…
What is a Big Hairy Audacious Goal (BHAG)?
A Big Hairy Audacious Goal should be a huge, daunting task, like running a marathon, completing a triathlon, or climbing Mount Everest, which at first glance, no one believes you will achieve. Since the inception of the term in 1994, it has inspired thousands of people and companies.
Who said that?
The source of the term Bhag or BHAG is James Collins and Jerry Porras from their book Built to Last: Successful Habits of Visionary Companies. The term itself is a strategic business statement, created to focus an organization on a single goal that is audacious, likely to be externally questionable, but not internally regarded as impossible.
This means; for my surroundings, it might be a stretch – but to me? I regard them all as possible – IF, and ONLY IF, I stay focused, work hard, and are willing to take those extra steps to succeed. Failing? It’s simply not an option.
On top of…?
In addition to these goals, of course, I have my “regular” goals – they’re more of the New Year kind; being a better father, husband, person, colleague, and friend, eating healthier, drinking less, being more positive, be more efficient, think more of the environment and such. They’re of course of great importance to me – but here I want to focus on my 10 Big Audacious Goals:
#1 Complete a Triathlon (Olympic Distance or Half Ironman)
#2 Complete a Marathon
#3 Complete Grenserittet
#4 Pass my CTS exam at InfoComm
#5 Start the process to complete my Bachelor Degree
#6 Lose weight with target at 72kg
#7 Be able to do 50 press-up/push-ups without pause
#8 Be able to do 200 Sit-ups without pause
#9 Start Scuba-diving again and get back under water!
#10 Get a new Tattoo
Yay! That was quite a few Big Hairy Audacious Goals for you(me, actually 😉 – and I’ll keep you posted on my progress!
Go Go GO!
PS! I would love to hear about your BHAG!
