Quicksand, the New York City quartet formed in 1990, aren’t just another band. They’re pioneers of the post-hardcore genre, blending raw energy with melodic depth. Walter Schreifels (vocals, guitar), Sergio Vega (bass), Tom Capone (guitar), and Alan Cage (drums) form the band. Their impact on the scene is undeniable.
My first meeting was unexpected. They opened for The Offspring in Oslo. They outshined the headliners with their raw intensity and musicality. The Offspring’s lead singer seemed more interested in guitar solos than delivering a memorable performance.
Quicksand, on the other hand, were a force of nature.
Their music is more than just sound; it’s an experience. “Lightning Fields” from their latest album, “Distant Populations,” showcases their evolution while staying true to their roots. “Manic Compression,” their 1995 masterpiece, holds a special place in my heart, with tracks like “Backward” and “Thorn in My Side” resonating deeply.
Since that first gig, I’ve caught them live 4-5 times, each show solidifying their status as a must-see act.
