Welcome to the Holodeck; RoomAlive – by Microsoft!

RoomAliveHow cool would it be if you turn your room – any room – into an interactive touch screen, where images are dynamically shifted in response to your movements? Allowing you to peak over and around the images and get deeply immersed in virtual reality environments?

I’d say it would be insanely cool!

Last year, Microsoft Research presented their project Illumiroom concept where the surrounding areas of your TV turned into a projected extension of the TV content. It looked cool and being the projection and visualization geek I am – I loved the concept!

This year, they have upped the ante!

RoomAlive is a proof-of-concept prototype that transforms any room into an immersive, augmented entertainment experience. It allows interactive projection mapping experiences that dynamically adapts content to any room. You can touch, shoot, stomp, dodge and steer projected content that blends seamlessly in the environment.

The coolest thing with RoomAlive is that it continuously reads your position and adapts the content accordingly. This allows RoomAlive to project images that dynamically shift in response to your viewing perspective, allowing you to peek over and around the images. 2D projection content will feel and appear as 3D, because of the system’s ability to create content with right scaling and shadows – tricking our eyes and mind.

I am so much looking forward to seeing this!
